UAB Minutes 06-27-17

MOUNTAIN IRON UTILITY ADVISORY BOARD

MINUTES

TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chairperson Renzaglia.  Members present:  Reynold Renzaglia, Harvey Hellyer, Bruce Peterson and Susan Tuomela. Others present:  Tim Satrang, Public Works Director, Joe Prebeg, Council Liaison, and Lisa Stevens, Accounting Technician.

It was moved by Harvey and supported by Bruce to approve the minutes of the April, 25 2017 meeting. The motion carried unanimously.

Ed Roskoski was present at the public forum. He brought up an issue regarding the waste water dumping site and doesn’t feel that its right for people to not be charged for dumping their campers at the dumping station while the citizens of the City are incurring the water and sewer fees. Ed feels that RV’s should be charged to dump as the average size tank is 20-50 gallons.  Renny questioned if the site is open to everyone and Joe Prebeg replied that yes it is open to accommodate for the campers at the West Two Rivers Campground. The city invoices Minntac for sewage dumping and it was requested to provide what the charges are for treating theirs as well. Joe would also like to know if area campsites charge dumping fees to their campers.

Dale Irish was also present and brought up the same type of issue as the dumping site is just down the road from his residence. He is concerned about the amount of people using it as it is a nuisance with the amount of traffic and some negligence on behalf of the users going by his house. Renny brought up the possibility of putting up a gate system and providing a key to the campers that would be needing to use it. Tim mentioned they could set up cameras in the meantime to monitor the amount of campers dumping there. When more inform

The Director of Public Works reported on a few items. One was the Waste Water Treatment Plant still has no permit and they are still discussing the trade regarding phosphorus. Also, the Nichols lagoons have the permits to be decommissioned so that project will be starting soon. The large trash report will be brought up next meeting. Renny questioned about a couple of outages; one on Highway 7 and one of Gardenia Street. Tim thought these were discussed at the last meeting however both outages were due to heaving of roads from the frost and very wet ground.

The Parks and Rec lighting is being paid by the P&R department not out of the utility funds. The golf ball situation was brought up to Lenny, lead P&R and he will talk to people that he believes might be doing this. LED lighting is pretty expensive but the return on investment is worth it according to Tim’s handout. Our policy now is that any replacements that need to be done should be upgraded to LED so this should be continued.

The color coding of the fire hydrants is still being looked into. Gerry Knapper, our fire chief, now works for the City and is going to be paired with Jeff Marks to familiarize with all the hydrants and to repair as necessary.

The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2017.

At 5:00 p.m., it was moved by Harvey and supported by Sue to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Lisa Stevens
