Required Inspections

  • Call the Building & Housing Department at (218) 748-7570 for all building and plumbing inspections.
  • All Commercial Structures need to have all fire resistant items inspected before enclosing and all Special Inspections required by the Minnesota State Building Code.
  • Please notify the Building Inspection Office before all inspections. Staff has 24 hours following your telephone call to make inspections.

Required Inspections

The reinforcing of steel or structural framework of any part of any building or structure shall not be covered or concealed without first obtaining the approval of the Building Official. The Building Official, upon notification, shall make the inspections set for in the following subsections.

Foundation Inspection

To be made after excavations for footings are complete and any required reinforcing steel is in place. For concrete foundations, any required forms shall be in place prior to inspection. All materials for the foundations shall be on the job, except where concrete is ready mixed in accordance with U.B.C. Standard 19-3, the concrete need not be on the job. Where the foundation is to be constructed of approved treated wood, additional inspections may be required by Building Official.

Concrete Slab or Under-Floor Inspections

To be made after all in slab or under floor building service equipment, conduit, piping accessories and other ancillary equipment items are in place, but before any concrete is placed or floor sheathing installed, including the subfloor.

Frame Inspections

To be made after the roof, all framing, fire blocking and bracing are in place and all pipes, chimneys and vents are complete and the rough electrical, plumbing, and heating wires, pipes and ducts are approved.

Insulation Inspections

To be made after all insulation and vapor retarder has been installed.

Lath or Gypsum Board Inspection

To be made after all lathing and gypsum board, interior and exterior, is in place, but before any plastering is applied or before gypsum board joints and fasteners are taped and finished.

Plumbing Inspections

All new construction and remodeling where there is new plumbing done, inspection and approval is required from the City plumbing inspector prior to covering any work.

Commercial/Industrial inspections may require a state inspection number prior to inspection. If state inspector cannot make the inspection, please contact the City Inspector for inspection.

Mechanical Inspection

All heating appliances are to be inspected after installation.

Final Inspection

A final inspection must be done to complete a Certificate of Occupancy before occupying the space.
