RESOLUTION NUMBER 22-25

AUTHORIZING THE PURSUIT OF 2025 LOCAL ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR THE UNITY DRIVE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

WHEREAS, the Unity Drive Reconstruction Project includes a full reconstruction of the roadway from Mountain Iron Drive to Enterprise Drive South; and

WHEREAS, the Unity Drive Reconstruction Project would provide a parallel route to Highway 169 on the trunk highway system and support local business development; and

WHEREAS, the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) administered by the Minnesota Department of Transportation makes available up to $1,500,000 to apply towards projects on local roads that are regionally significant, result in safety improvements, address transportation deficiencies, and contribute to economic development; and 

WHEREAS, the proposed project is not fiscally possible without a transportation grant funding award; and 

WHEREAS, LRIP requires a city, such as Mountain Iron, that is not a State Aid city, to have a county sponsor and the support of the County Board, and

WHEREAS, the City of Mountain Iron requests sponsorship from Saint Louis County for the Unity Drive Reconstruction Project; and

WHEREAS, the proposed year for project construction is 2026.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF MOUNTAIN IRON, MINNESOTA, that  

  1. The City Council hereby supports the Unity Drive Reconstruction Project; and 
  2. The City Council hereby supports the City’s pursuit of LRIP funding and authorizes staff to prepare and submit such application; and
  3. The City Council hereby seeks the support by resolution of Saint Louis County to act as Sponsor for the City of Mountain Iron’s LRIP funding application and the associated project for the reconstruction of Unity Drive, and
  4. The City Council hereby commits to funding project elements not eligible for LRIP funding and ensuring the Project complies with LRIP funding requirements and timelines.
