Resolution 21-99 Supporting the QCEDA

RESOLUTION NUMBER 21-99

SUPPORTING JOINT QUAD CITIES AREA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

WHEREAS, the City of Mountain Iron (Hereafter “the City”) seeks to do what it can to support the growth of the local economy in order that quality jobs are made available to its residents, which, in turn, will enhance the quality of life of its citizens and increase the tax base of the city; and

WHEREAS, in order that it can make the best possible use of its limited financial resources, the City seeks to cooperate and collaborate, where feasible, with neighboring communities to promote such economic development; and

WHEREAS, the City desires to accelerate discussions with neighboring communities to further investigate such opportunities, and hopefully, enter into joint powers or other agreements which will allow the partnering communities to define, conduct and share in the cost of such activities, and

WHEREAS, a joint meeting of the councils of the Quad Cities of Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron and Virginia to discuss such opportunities and negotiate such joint powers or other agreements is seen as the best way to move forward expeditiously.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City publicly announces its intent to investigate such opportunities and negotiate such joint power or other agreements; and to do so, the City hereby calls and makes public notice of a special meeting of its council to be held jointly with the councils of neighboring communities that take similar action. This joint meeting shall be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the IRRRB Headquarters, 1006 Highway #53 South, Eveleth, Minnesota. The agenda of such meeting shall include but not be limited to discussion of the following items:

A joint powers agreement that defines the scope of shared economic development activities and specifies how the partnering communities shall share the costs of such activities.

Designation of appropriate officials to negotiate the details of such agreements and bring them back to the respective governing body of each partnering community for its consideration.
