Resolution 04-01 Regarding Steel Industry

RESOLUTION NUMBER 04-01

REQUESTING ENFORCEMENT OF ANTI-DUMPING LAWS WITH REGARD TO STEEL IMPORTS

WHEREAS, Mountain Iron is home to USS Minntac operation, the largest taconite producer in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, surges in United States imports of steel from countries whose currencies have depreciated and from steel-producing countries that are no longer able to export steel to other countries will continue; and,

WHEREAS, it is illegal and unfair for foreign countries to dump their steel in the US and try to save their jobs by taking ours; and,

WHEREAS, if the “dumping” is not stopped, there are thousands of jobs at stake; and,

WHEREAS, there is a well recognized need for improvements in the enforcement of United States trade laws to provide an effective response to these situations.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, that the City of Mountain Iron requests the President of the United States to take all actions necessary to enforce applicable trade agreements and laws of the United States pertaining to steel imports; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, that the City of Mountain Iron requests the President of the United States to immediately impose a one-year ban on imports of all steel products that are not abiding by the spirit and letter of international trade agreements with respect to imports of steel products into the United States.

DULY ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL THIS 5TH DAY OF FEBRUARY 2000.
