MINUTES
MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL
November 4, 2019
Mayor Skalko called the City Council meeting to order at 6:32p.m. with the following members present: Councilor Joe Prebeg Jr., Alan Stanaway, Julie Buria, Steve Skogman, and Mayor Gary Skalko. Also present were: Craig Wainio, City Administrator; Tim Satrang, Director of Public Works; Anna Amundson, Library Director/Special Events Coordinator; and Amanda Inmon, Municipal Services Secretary. Absent members: Councilor Julie Buria.
It was moved by Skalko and seconded by Prebeg that the consent agenda be approved as follows:
- Add the following items to the agenda:
- A. 1. Advertise for Parks & Recreation Board member
- Approve the minutes of the October 21, 2019, regular meeting as submitted.
- That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.
- To acknowledge the receipts for the period October 16-31, totaling $218,322.15 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
- To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period October 16-31, totaling $171,031.89 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.
Public Forum:
- No one spoke during the forum
The Mayor reported on the following:
- Congratulations to the MIB Football team on their Section VII -9 man team
- Next game – Friday, November 8th in Duluth vs South Ridge
- Congratulations to the Cross Country Team members that went to State

- Jeffrey Kayfes
It was moved by Skalko and seconded by Prebeg to advertise in the Hometown Focus for the position on the Parks & Recreation Board, with applications due by Friday, November 22, 2019 by 4:00pm to the Mountain Iron City Hall. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.
City Administrator:
- Approved by the Public Facilities Authority (PFA), new well project met necessary requirements
- Calendar parking in effect for the winter season
- Congratulations to the City of Mountain Iron for achieving the SOLSMART Bronze award, which is in recognition of the achievements and commitment to solar energy
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Skogman that the liquor and cigarette license applications for the period of January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020, be approved and issued to the establishments pursuant to the approval, where necessary, of the Liquor Control Commission and pursuant to the payment of all outstanding taxes, license fees, and utility charges:

Library Director/Special Events Director:
- Saturday, October 26th “Larry Nanti 5k/10k walk/run”

- Sunday, October 27th Annual Halloween Carnival at Mountain Iron Community Center
- Big thank you to all the volunteers for their help over the weekend
It was moved by Skogman and seconded by Stanaway to accept the recommendation of the Planning & Zoning Committee and approve the Conditional Use and Variance permit for John Lucas and Cindy Kujala to build a storage building at Parcel # 175-0055-02070. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.
It was moved by Skogman and seconded by Stanaway to approve Ordinance #05-19; Amending Section 154 of the Mountain Iron City Code (a copy is attached and made a part of these minutes). The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.
It was moved by Skogman and seconded by Prebeg to approve the request from Jim Makowsky, AmericInn Lodge & Suites General Manager and upgrade their Liquor License to the next level allowing them to serve full strength beer. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.
Big thank you to all our Veterans, past, present and future, along with all Emergency Services Personnel, First Responders, Police, and Firefighters for their service.
