MINUTES
MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 2, 2015
Mayor Skalko called the City Council meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. with the following members present: Joe Prebeg, Jr., Susan Tuomela, Tony Zupancich, and Mayor Gary Skalko. Absent member included: Alan Stanaway. Also present were: Craig J. Wainio, City Administrator; Jill M. Clark, Municipal Services Secretary; Sally Yuccas, Librarian/Special Events Coordinator; and John Backman, Sergeant.
It was moved by Skalko and seconded by Tuomela that the consent agenda be approved as follows:
- Approve the minutes of the January 20, 2015, regular meeting as submitted.
- That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.
- To acknowledge the receipts for the period January 16-31, 2015, totaling $293,784.44, (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
- To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period January 16-31, 2015, totaling $155,840.91, (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
The motion carried on the following roll call vote: Prebeg, yes; Zupancich, yes; Tuomela, yes; Skalko, yes; and Stanaway, absent.
No one spoke during the public forum.
The Mayor reported on the following:
- Condolences: To the families of William Nelson and Warren Nordeen.
It was moved by Zupancich and seconded by Tuomela to authorize Van Iwaarden Associates to update the City’s Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) report at an estimated cost of $5,400. The motion carried on the following roll call vote: Zupancich, yes; Tuomela, yes; Prebeg, yes; Skalko, yes; and Stanaway, absent.
The City Administrator reported on the following:
- Recycling Trailer. The City of Eveleth had agreed to work together on the recycling trailer.
- West Two Rivers Campground. The City would be accepting reservations for the campground in March.
- Congratulations. To Mike Downs on the birth of his granddaughter.
The Library Director/Special Events Director reported on the following:
- Library Report. Submitted the January 2015 report to the Council.
- Free Event Tickets. She announced that there are free admittance tickets to several different concerts in the area and the tickets were provided from the Legacy Program and were available in limited quantities at the Mountain Iron Library.
- Merritt Days Committee. She said that she would submit the meeting minutes to the Council at the next meeting. Next meeting was scheduled for February 19, 2015 at the Mountain Iron Library. Contact Sally Yuccas at the Library if you are interested in serving on this Committee.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Zupancich to authorize the purchase of a 2015 Ford Police Interceptor Utility (SUV) AWD squad from Lundgren Ford of Eveleth at a cost of $27,144.44. The motion carried on the following roll call vote: Tuomela, yes; Prebeg, yes; Zupancich, yes; Skalko, yes; and Stanaway, absent.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Tuomela to approve the appointment of Jerry Knapper as Assistant Fire Chief. The motion carried with Stanaway absent.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Tuomela to appoint Dan Zupancich as Assistant EMS Director. The motion carried with Zupancich abstaining and Stanaway absent.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Zupancich to authorize Staff to post for two Captain’s position. The motion carried with Stanaway absent.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Tuomela to authorize Staff to advertise for fire fighter and EMS positions. The motion carried with Stanaway absent.
It was moved by Zupancich and seconded by Tuomela to authorize the purchase of a Kohler gas engine generator from Total Energy Systems LLC at a cost of $30,500. The motion carried on the following roll call vote: Prebeg, yes; Zupancich, yes; Tuomela, yes; Skalko, yes; and Stanaway, absent.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Tuomela to reschedule the next meeting for Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. The motion carried with Stanaway absent.
At 6:55 p.m., it was moved by Skalko and seconded by Tuomela that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried with Stanaway absent.
