Meeting Minutes for April 28, 1999
MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING
Deputy Mayor Piri called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. with the following members present: Stephen Skogman, Joe Matanich and Curt Piri. Also present were Craig Wainio, City Administrator and Jerry Kujula, Zoning Administrator.
The following board and commission members were present:
Planning and Zoning Commission: Ray Saari, Armiida Rudlong and Barb Fivecoate.
The meeting was for the review of certain aspects of the developing Comprehensive Plan. Mr. Dick Krier conducted the review. Stating that a review of the proposed land use plan and proposed policy statements was in order.
A proposed land use plan was presented and discussed.
Land use policies were reviewed.
Should residential development be concentrated around the new City center or should it expand to the South?
Do you want the mining reserve line to move North or South?
Housing policies were reviewed.
Should proposed policy number 5 remain in the plan?
Transportation policies were reviewed.
How should the Mesabi Trail be routed to the West? (Consensus was through Old Town and the existing bridge)
Public Facility Policies were reviewed.
Should a future location of a Fire Hall be considered in the new City center? (consensus was yes)
Should we expand to the South “Lakes” area?
Should we designate a location for a future Library in the new City center? (consensus was yes)
Should the Calvary Cemetery be included in the Plan? (consensus was yes)
Economic Development Policies were reviewed.
Natural Resources Policies were reviewed.
A discussion of truck routes took place. The item is to be placed on the next Planning and Zoning Commission agenda for their review and discussion.
The Comprehensive Plan approval process was reviewed with the group.
Councilor Piri moved and supported by Councilor Matanich that Councilor Skogman be appointed to the Board of the Quad Cities Joint Recreational Authority.
The matter was tabled until the full City Council is present.
At 8:25 p.m., it was moved by Councilor Skogman and supported by Councilor Matanich that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried.
