 MINUTES

MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL

May 2, 2022

Mayor Anderson called the City Council meeting to order at 6:30p.m. with the following members present: Councilor Ed Roskoski, Julie Buria, Joe Prebeg Jr. and Mayor Peggy Anderson. Also present were: Craig Wainio, City Administrator; Tim Satrang, Public Works Director; Anna Amundson, Library Director/Special Events Coordinator; Amanda Inmon, Municipal Services Secretary; Al Johnson, City Engineer; and Grant Toma, Sheriff’s Department.

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria that the consent agenda be approved as follows:

 

  1. Approve the minutes of the April 18, 2022 regular meeting as submitted.

 

  1. Approve the minutes of the April 21, 2022 Local Board of Appeals & Equalization Board.

 

  1. That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.

 

  1. To acknowledge the receipts for the period April 16-30, totaling $1,649,762.45 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes),

 

  1. To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period April 16-30, totaling $1,467,585.98 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).

 

The motion carried (Yes: Buria, Anderson, Prebeg; No: Roskoski).

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by to amend the motion, which was made and supported to include adding the missing information and to rectify the mistake, which was made in the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization minutes. The motion failed to lack of support.

 

Public Forum:

 

  • No one spoke during the public forum

 

The Mayor reported on the following:

 

  • No formal report

 

City Administrator:

 

  • Northstar Credit Union recently purchased the former “Perkins” restaurant

 

Director of Public Works:

 

  • City Crew recently repaired waterline, it had been leaking for a long time into the Iroquois Pit
  • Inflow & Infiltration within the Wastewater treatment plant is high
  • Please ensure sump pumps are working properly and up to code
  • Electrical conversation conducted recently – the existing line that was fed from Virginia is now being fed from the Mountain Iron owned sub-station near Walmart
  • Big thank you to City Crew, City Staff, Minnesota Power’s Crew and Virginia’s Crew in helping make it successful with no incidents

Library Director/Special Events Coordinator:

 

  • No formal report
  • “Community Clean up” scheduled Wednesday, May 18th – Saturday, May 21st

 

Sheriff’s Department:

 

  • No formal report

 

City Engineer:

 

  • No formal report

 

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria to approve Pay Request No. 5 – for the Proposed Well #3, Bid Package 2 project in the amount of $24,225.00, to TNT Construction Group, LLC, Grand Rapids, MN. This amount includes a 5% retainage. The motion carried on roll call vote (4:0).

 

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by to accept the Fire Department report as presented. The motion failed due to lack of support.

 

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Roskoski to accept the recommendation of the Utility Advisory Board and approve the large trash pick-up for City of Mountain Iron residents with garbage service fee of $10.00, scheduled for the first couple of weeks of June. Complete form and payment must be turned in and paid for by May 27th by 4pm, with utility bill current. The motion carried.

 

It was moved by Buria and seconded by Prebeg to approve the Letter of Understanding as presented between the City of Mountain Iron and local AFSCME. The motion carried.

 

It was moved by Buria and seconded by Roskoski to approve Resolution #06-22; Authorizing the City of Mountain Iron to make an Application to and Accept Funds from the Residential Redevelopment Grant Program (a copy is attached and made a part of these minutes). The motion carried.

 

Announcement:

 

  • Merritt Days Committee planning meeting
  • Tuesday, May 17th @ 6:00pm @ MIB High school commons area (use Door #4)

 

At 6:53p.m., it was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried.
