MINUTES
MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL
July 17, 2023
Mayor Anderson called the City Council meeting to order at 6:30p.m. with the following members present: Councilor Ed Roskoski, Al Stanaway, Joe Prebeg Jr., Julie Buria and Mayor Peggy Anderson. Also present were: Craig Wainio, City Administrator; Tim Satrang, Director of Public Works; Anna Amundson, Library Director/Special Events Coordinator; Amanda Inmon, Municipal Services Secretary; Al Johnson, City Engineering; Bryan Lindsay, City Attorney; and SGT Toma, Sheriff’s Department.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Stanaway the consent agenda be approved as follows:
- Approve the minutes of the July 5, 2023 regular meeting.
- That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.
- To acknowledge the receipts for the period July 1-15, $193,488.40 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes),
- To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period July 1-15, totaling $374,995.41 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
The motion carried (Yes: Stanaway, Prebeg, Anderson, Buria; No: Roskoski).
It was moved by Roskoski to amend the original motion to remove the Napa Christenson Parts bills in the amount of $400.00 and the Taconite Tire bills in the amount of $987.00 from the consent agenda for separate consideration. The motion failed due to lack of support.
Public Forum:
- No one spoke during the public forum
The Mayor reported on the following:
- Thank you to the City Crew for continued pothole patching & tree trimming
City Administrator:
- No formal report
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Roskoski for Councilor members to work with City Staff to work on plans and ideas to help expedite the completion of Nichols Town Hall. The motion carried.
Director of Public Works:
- No formal report
It was moved by Buria and seconded by Prebeg to accept the proposed quote from Maddox Industrial Transformer for the purchase of a 300 KVA pad-mount spare transformer, in the amount $20,000. The motion carried on roll call vote.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria to accept the proposed quote from MP Systems for the modification to our electrical system from the old substation near downtown to the west side of Mineral Avenue, material cost approximately $19,700 and labor cost approximately $48,000. The motion carried on roll call vote.
Library Director/Special Events Coordinator:
- National Night Out
- Mountain Iron Community Center
- Tuesday, August 1st from 4:00pm – 7:00pm
- Special thanks for all of those that helped out with the July 4th Parade
Sheriff’s Department:
- No formal report
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria to accept the proposed quote authorizing the purchase of a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado PPV in the amount $46,000 with additional required equipment installation for $16,000. The vehicle will be delivered mid-2024 and will be part of the 2024 Capital Improvement budget. The motion carried on roll call vote.
City Engineer:
- Parkville trail project – work continuing on North/South stretch
City Attorney:
- No formal report
Fire Department:
- First Responder class starting – finishing end of August
- Testing company inspected/barcoded and tested multiple pieces of equipment, 100% compliance

It was moved by Buria and seconded by Prebeg to accept the proposed quote authorizing the repair of the Fire Department Pumper #04 in the amount $7,656.70, at Macqueen Equipment. The motion carried on roll call vote.
It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Buria to accept the resignation of Mary Jacobsen from her position on the Mountain Iron Economic Development Board, effective June 30, 2023. The motion carried.
It was moved by Roskoski to contact Kim Koebensky to fill the vacate seat on the Mountain Iron Economic Development Authority as suggested by Mary Jacobsen. The motion failed due to lack of support.

At 7:10p.m., it was moved by Buria and seconded by Stanaway that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried.
