 MINUTES

MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL

August 1, 2022

Mayor Anderson called the City Council meeting to order at 6:30p.m. with the following members present: Councilor Ed Roskoski, Joe Prebeg Jr., and Mayor Peggy Anderson. Also present were: Craig Wainio, City Administrator; Tim Satrang, Public Works Director; Anna Amundson, Library Director/Special Events Coordinator, Amanda Inmon, Municipal Services Secretary; and Al Johnson, City Engineer. Absent members: Councilor Julie Buria

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Roskoski that the consent agenda be approved as follows:

  1. Approve the minutes of the July 18, 2022 regular meeting as submitted.
  2. That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.
  3. To acknowledge the receipts for the period July 16-31, totaling $869,701.56 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes),
  4. To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period July 16-31, totaling $510,665.79 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).

The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

Public Forum:

  • Jerry Kujala, Zoning Administrator spoke in regards shipping containers used at accessory buildings being painted earth-tone colors as stated in the City Ordinance, as well as residents using RV’s as dwellings, Ordinance states they can be used as seasonal cabins only not permanent usage, was wondering what other cities do in response to this

The Mayor reported on the following:

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by Prebeg to appoint Mrs. Lauren Buffetta to the Planning and Zoning Commission Board. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

City Administrator:

  • No formal report

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Anderson that the Council hire the following as election judges, and to allow staff to hire additional judges as needed to fill required vacancies for the 2022 Primary and General Elections:

The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Anderson to authorize Mr. Nathan Welch to become a permanent employee and continue his employment as a mechanic for the City of Mountain Iron, as he completed his probationary period. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

Director of Public Works:

  • Thank you to the crew for their work as well as MN Power, Lanyk Electric, recently completed a service upgrade

Library Director/Special Events Coordinator:

  • National Night Out
  • Tuesday, August 2nd from 4:00pm – 7:00pm
  • Meet local Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department

City Engineer:

  • No formal report

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by to accept the Fire Department report as presented. The motion failed due to lack of support.

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Anderson to approve Resolution #11-22; Declaring Cost to be Assessed, and Ordering Preparation of Proposed Assessment (a copy is attached and made a part of these minutes). The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent (Yes: Anderson, Prebeg; No: Roskoski).

It was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Roskoski to approve the request to by the Merritt Days Committee and close roads/block off the following streets in Old Downtown for the Merritt Days Celebration:

  • Wednesday, August 10th – Music in the Park
  • Locomotive Park from 4:00pm-8:00pm
  • Friday, August 12th – Sunday, August 14th
  • Mountain Iron Avenue from Locomotive Park (north) to the alley behind Benchmark Engineering (south)
  • Main Street from Slate Street (west) to Marble Avenue (east) with barricades on the adjoining alleys along Main Street

The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by Prebeg to authorize Mountain Iron American Legion Post#220 to serve alcohol and sell at the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association membership banquet scheduled for September 10, 2022 at the Mountain Iron Community Center. The motion carried with Councilor Buria absent.

Announcements:

  • Merritt Days Committee meeting
  • Thursday, August 4th @ 5:00pm at Mac’s Bar
  • Merritt Days Celebration days Wednesday, August 10th – Saturday, August 13th

At 6:56p.m., it was moved by Prebeg and seconded by Roskoski that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried.

  1. Mediacom will be implementing rate changes on or about August 2nd for their programs, due to an increase in programming cost, inflationary pressure and supply chain challenges.
