Mountain Iron Planning and Zoning Commission

October 28, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairman Steve Skogman.

Those Present: Jim Techar, Steve Skogman, Steve Erickson, Margaret Soyring, Barb Fivecoate and Jerry Kujala, Zoning Administrator. Absent members: Tim Johnston.

It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Techar to close the regular meeting and open the Public Hearing for John Lucas and Cindy Kujala. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

The purpose of the public hearing is to consider a request made by John Lucan and Cindy Kujala, for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for a garage which exceeds 900 sq. ft. in area and a Variance Permit for a garage which exceeds 15 ft. in height. The property is legally described as follows:

                        Lots 8& 9, Block 010, South Grove Addition to Mountain Iron

                        Address: 5425 Garden Drive South, Mountain Iron, MN 55768

                        Parcel Code: 175-0055-02070

There was no one to speak and no correspondence received.

It was moved by Soyring and seconded by Fivecoate to close the public hearing and reconvene the regular meeting. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Soyring to close the regular meeting and open the Public Hearing to Amend an Ordinance within the City. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

The purpose of the public hearing is to amend an Ordinance within the City of Mountain Iron City Code:

Section 1. Amending Section 154.028. Section 154.028 (C) (9) of the Mountain Iron City Code is hereby added and is to read as follows:

(9) Necessary facilities for the production of electric power, including, but not limited to dams, reservoirs and power plants. Projects including mandatory review of the Minnesota Environmental Quality Council shall be exempt from conditional use review.

There was no one to speak and no correspondence.

It was moved by Techar and seconded by Fivecoate to close the public hearing and reconvene the regular meeting. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

It was moved by Soyring and seconded by Fivecoate to recommend the City Council approve the Conditional Use and Variance permit for John Lucas and Cindy Kujala. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Techar to recommend the City Council approve the Ordinance change to 154.028. The motion carried with Johnston absent.

Zoning Administrator Kujala reported that a letter had been sent to a property owner in Ann’s Acres informing them that the structure on their property did not meet setbacks and that the fire pit was on City property. The Commission members did not receive a copy of the letter. Skogman stated that he talked to the owner, who wants to attend to a P&Z meeting but could not be here today.

Kujala also reported that part of the Woodland Estates development needs to be rezoned as it is now Rural Residential. He will set up a public hearing to get it changed.

It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Erickson to adjourn the meeting at 7:20 p.m. The motion carried with Johnston absent.
