Sgt Torma had an update on staffing in the Mt.Iron Sheriff’s office: They continue to be fully staffed; some new deputies in the area and some have moved or will be moving out to another area closer to their homes. Nobody leaving the department at this time. They are always hiring.
Old Business:
The Board selected their officers:
Board Chair Alan Stanaway-motion by Lisa, support by Mary-all in favor-all yes.
Vice Chair Margaret Soyring-motion by Lisa, supported by Alan-all in favor vote-all yes.
Secretary Mary Luomanen -motion by Margaret, supported by Lisa-all in favor vote-all yes.
New Business:
Next meeting Lisa and Alan will talk with Fire Chief Madden to be in attendance or send a representative to discuss their new truck. Does the staff like it? What other updates do they have?
Open forum:
No new reports of people living in the storage containers. Sue brought up sometimes in the summer it looks like someone may be staying the dugout buildings at the ballfield; nobody is there but there are a lot of belongings. Sgt. Torma said if people see that, call 911, say it is not an emergency, then the deputies can check on the situation during their patrols.
Silver Creek Liquor applied for a new license for THC products to sell. They previously had one but this one is for a different category.
Mary brought up the safety issue by Walmart and the ERATs school. Students cross at the 3 way intersection and there is no crosswalk or anything. It was discussed that even with a crosswalk people don’t obey-and this is on a County road, not city. Option to discuss with County to look into this when they put in the sidewalk down to Nichols Rd.
Sue brought up an idea about having a summer safety program for kids. A week long camp with 1-2 hours a day to discuss safety at home, around vehicles, have a nurse come speak about medications and first aid, etc. The board thought it was a great idea and maybe we could talk with Anna at the library and activities. Maybe it could be tied in with Fire Safety Week.
Next meeting is March 25th, 2026.
Motion to adjourn by Mary and supported by Lisa at 6:42pm, motion carried.
