Mountain Iron Planning and Zoning Commission

July 24, 2023

 

Chairperson Jim Techar called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. with the following members present: Margaret Soyring, Al Stanaway, Lauren Buffetta, Steve Hunter, Mayor Peggy Anderson and Jerry Kujala, Zoning Administrator. Absent members: Barb Fivecoate.

It was moved by Stanaway and seconded by Buffetta to approve the consent agenda and minutes of the June 26, 2023 meeting. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.

  • Ed Roskoski once again presented the Commission with definitions of RV’s, mobile homes, etc. Which he gathered from various sources. Mr. Roskoski informed that the City Council will approve the City’s definitions not him.

It was moved by Soyring and seconded by Hunter to close the regular meeting and open the public hearing. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.

The purpose of the public hearing is to amend a City Ordinance.

The P&Z Board was given a copy of the ordinance amendment.

Jerry Kujala read the following:

  • Amending Chapter 154 of the Mountain Iron City Code, to insert the following:
  • Section 154.22 C (14) Rural Residential District (RR)
  • Section 154.023 C (9) Urban Residential District, Non-Sewered (UR/NS)
  • Section 154.024 C (8) Urban Residential District, Sewered (UR/S)
  • RV used as a dwelling on a temporary basis and left onsite. Adequate provisions for water supply and sewage disposal must be demonstrated. No appurtenances (such as decks or porches) may be constructed for the RV. The temporary use may not exceed one year.

 

Brad Neyens, owner of land on which an RV is parked spoke to the Board. Stating that he intends to build a home on this property, however he wants to enjoy the lakeshore property until home is built.  He had no objection to applying for a CUP, but wanted to know if it could be extended beyond a year if he is in the construction stage.

The P&Z Board felt the following language should be added:

  • Conditional Use Permit may be extended if a building permit has been issued.

It was moved by Hunter and seconded by Buffetta to close the public hearing and open the regular meeting. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.

It was moved by Hunter and seconded by Buffetta to resume the regular meeting. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.

It was moved by Soyring and seconded by Hunter to table the revision of the Ordinance until the P&Z Board receives a copy of the proposed changes. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.

Zoning Administrator report:

  • Reported that one of the containers in downtown Mountain Iron has been painted, but nothing has been heard from the other party
  • The building permit for the ISD#712 storage building has not been approved, due to lack of a survey and site plan, neither which have been submitted
  • There have been no building permits applied for by the property owners on Admiral Road which built a storage building. It therefore it had been turned over to the City Attorney, after which the property owners have agreed to apply for a building permit.

At 7:25p.m., it was moved by Buffetta and seconded by Hunter that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried with Fivecoate absent.
