Mountain Iron Planning and Zoning Commission
June 26, 2023
Vice Chairperson Lauren Buffetta called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. with the following members present: Margaret Soyring, Al Stanaway, Lauren Buffetta, Steve Hunter, Barb Fivecoate, Mayor Peggy Anderson and Jerry Kujala, Zoning Administrator. Absent members: Jim Techar.
It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Hunter to approve the minutes of the May 8, 2023 meeting. The motion carried with Techar absent.
It was moved by Soyring and seconded by Fivecoate to recommend the City Council approve the CUP for ISD #712. The hearing was held on May 8, as follows:
The purpose of the public hearing is to consider the request made by Independent School District #712 for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). The Conditional Use is for an installation of a garage that is over 900 square feet. The property is legally described as follows:

LEGAL DESCRIPTION: PLAT NAME MT. IRON; SECTION 14; TOWNSHIP 58; RANGE 18; LOT-; BLOCK-; DESCRIPTION: E 300 FT OF THE N 600 FT OF NE1/4 OF NW1/4
ADDRESS: 8632 Unity Drive, Mountain Iron, MN 55768
The motion carried with Techar absent.
- Zoning Administrator Kujala reported there are several campers/RVs scattered throughout Mt. Iron that appear to be occupied. The City Ordinance states that residences must be at least 20’ wide.
It was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Soyring that Mr. Kujala send letters to inform the property owners that these campers/RVs which are being occupied, are in conflict with the City Ordinance and ask them to attend a meeting to discuss this matter on July 24, 2023. The motion carried with Techar absent.
- Discussion ensued regarding the ongoing blight conditions throughout the City
- It was the consensus of the Committee to ask the Health & Safety Board to request the City get a Blight Officer
At 7:35p.m., it was moved by Fivecoate and seconded by Hunter that the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried with Techar absent.
